What is mental retardation? Mental retardation is characterized by: - Below average intellectual functioning
- Significant deficit in adaptive behavioral skills in the areas of communication, self-care, home living, self-direction, social skills, use of community resources, functional academic skills, work, leisure and health
- Onset prior to 18 years of age
Who is eligible to receive mental retardation services? Lubbock Regional MHMR provides services for people with a diagnosis of mental retardation based on the following three criteria: - The person must have an IQ level of 70 or below or a related condition, and
- The person's Adaptive Behavior Level (ABL) must be significantly below the norm, and
- The onset of the condition must have occurred between birth and 18 years
There are some individuals who may meet only two out of three of the above mentioned criteria. Those persons would not have a diagnosis of mental retardation, but may be eligible for other services through Lubbock Regional MHMR Center. In what ways can Lubbock Regional MHMR Center help? Lubbock Regional MHMR Center manages a network of residential and support services for people with mental retardation. All individuals found eligible for services will be given a choice of providers, and be assisted by a service coordinator to develop a plan for services. |
