Drug Prevention Information Available to the Public February 25, 2004 The Prevention Resource Center (PRC) is a prevention project that makes the most current up-to-date drug abuse prevention information such as audio, video and written materials available to the public by walk-in, mail and online order. The PRC is the result of an initiative between the Lubbock Regional MHMR Center and the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse and serves 41 counties in the Texas Panhandle. The PRC is located at 1708-B Avenue G in Lubbock. The PRC also offers Internet access via its public computer terminal as well as a public viewing area for anyone who wishes to preview videos related to drug prevention and other substance abuse issues. A current focus of the PRC is the use of tobacco among young people. The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids estimates that 24.7% of high school students in Texas smoke and approximately 77.4 million packs of cigarettes are bought or smoked by kids each year. It is also estimated that over 480,000 kids will die prematurely from smoking. The staff at the PRC encourage professionals, educators, students and family members from the community to access these services and join them in reducing the toll tobacco has on Texas youth.
