Artists Challenging the Stigma of Mental Illness

September 4, 2003

Lubbock Regional MHMR Center is very pleased to host “Sunshine from Darkness”, a traveling art exhibit provided by NARSAD Artworks and sponsored by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, which is now on display at Mahon Public Library through September 23rd.

Lubbock Regional MHMR Center is honored to present the works of accomplished artists, all of whom have two things in common: an abundance of creative skill and mental illness. Some of the artists are highly trained and some are self-taught. Some have jobs and live independently and others live in sheltered environments. All have had lives influenced by the darkness of mental illness. Through persistence and dedication, all have brought sunshine into the world around them.

The theme “Sunshine from Darkness” represents the creation of something beautiful and meaningful despite suffering from a brain disorder – making a positive out of a negative. It also expresses the concept that artistic ability and performance can be a ray of light for an artist who is experiencing mental illness. Since it’s inception, the exhibit has grown to over 80 pieces and has traveled nationwide.

A special public reception to celebrate the artworks is planned for Monday, September 8 from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Mahon Library. The reception will be hosted by Lubbock Regional MHMR Center.
