What is mental illness?
Mental illness is a medical disease that may disrupt a person’s thinking, feelings, moods and ability to relate to others. These symptoms can be controlled through strategies which may include rehabilitative services and medical treatments. How do you know if a child is eligible to receive mental health services?
A child would meet the “priority population” definition if he or she: - Is under the age of 18
- Is diagnosed with a mental illness
- Has severe emotional, behavioral and/or mental disorders
- Has serious functional impairments
The following factors would also indicate eligibility within “priority population” guidelines: - Risk of disruption of preferred living or child care environment due to symptoms
- Enrolled in a school system’s special education program because of a serious emotional disturbance
The level of services received depends upon the child’s level of need. In what ways can Lubbock Regional MHMR Center help?
Lubbock Regional MHMR Center manages a network of services for children and adolescents with mental illness. Screenings and assessments and free and available to everyone, and psychiatric care is available to individuals determined to be eligible. All individuals found eligible for services will be given a choice of providers, and be assisted by a service coordinator to develop a plan for services. Parents are encouraged to be involved in all aspects of the child's treatment.
