The Story of Clarence and Viola

Clarence repeatedly told his children he never wanted to be a burden on them. “You all have your own life, mouths to feed and bills to pay. I don’t ever want you to worry about taking care of these old bones.” Clarence just lost his wife of 53 years to a heart attack and the family now has to determine the next step. Clarence and Viola were both very hard working and independent. Both retired from the school system and had plans to spend their last years in the home that they had worked so hard to purchase. It was in this same home that they raised all five of their children. It was not until about seven years ago when that simple request didn’t seem promising.

Viola had begun to develop heart problems. She was bombarded with doctor’s visits, medications, treatment and the stress of an altered lifestyle. If that was not difficult enough, while at home alone, she tripped and had a terrible fall, breaking her right hip. Now not only was heart health an issue but mobility was as well. Clarence was there helping when and where he could. However, his body had also begun to show signs of aging. Neither one of them wanted their children to have to quit their jobs in order to care for them. But they needed help…and needed it soon.

Now Viola is gone, and Clarence is at home alone. His children worry that he needs to have more social interaction. He is at home most of the day with little SUPPORT  and they are left unaware of his health and physical states.  They are faced with the dilemma of moving their father out of his home that he labored so hard to own into, their home or an assisted living facility.

***

The story of Clarence and Viola is fictional; however, it is a reality for many families today. Wouldn’t it have been wonderful for the couple to have had in-home assistance, as well as a place to receive therapy, recreation and medical attention?  Wouldn’t it be nice if Clarence could still live in the home that is dear to him, while also giving his children the peace of mind that he is well socially, physically and mentally? La Paloma is Lubbock’s first and only Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE).  According to Carson Scott, Director of La Paloma, “Our services are centered around the individual. Our goal is to allow seniors to live in the community for as long as possible. PACE services make it possible for each participant to maintain his or her independence by providing the appropriate medical supports, in-home assistance and socialization opportunities.”  La Paloma will include an adult activity center, a full service medical clinic, and a daily activity Specialty Care Unit for people diagnosed with Alzheimer ’s disease or suffer from other forms of dementia. La Paloma will be just the thing many families want and need.
